Alert #2: Shell’s Spill at Ikot Ada Udo |

Location: Ikot Ada Udo, Ikot Abasi LGA, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria Cause of Spill: Facility failure Oil Company: Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Action taken by Shell: None The spill at Ikot Ada Udo continues unabated and Shell Petroleum Development Company continues to pay deaf ears to the cries of local people for a halt to the environmental assault.
Actions taken by the Community: Immediately the community people noticed the incident they reported to the village council. The village council and elders led by the village head Ete Idung Emmanuel made the report to Shell and the state government.
Actions taken by Akwa Ibom State Government: The state government represented by the deputy governor, Engr Patrick Ekpotu and later the Commissioner for Environment Lady Valarie Ebe have visited the site but so far it's all promises with nothing being done to stop the spill or control the spread.
Spreading Spill The spill is spreading, aided by heavy rainfall being experienced. It has extended to other communities including Ikpa Nnung Asang. Up till now Shell has not visited the site despite the several requests by the clan head Etebom Celestine Udua.
Assessing the Impacts The community has commissioned Environmental Professionals to study the extent of damage and the health impact. The group which is led by a seasoned environmentalist Prof Eno Udo is expected to also study other corked oil wells.
What you can do - Send a letter to your legislator (Local Government, State and National) to call Shell to order.
- Demand a clean up of the degraded environment.
- Write to Shell and demand that they should immediately halt the spill, repair their faulty equipment and compensate the community and the people for the havoc wreaked on their environment and means of livelihood.
